Technical Analysis

The vulnerability CVE-2026-44961 in Revive Adserver involves a validation bypass in the XML-RPC API addUser method. This bypass was introduced as a regression in the fix for CVE-2025-55129. Due to the missing validation, attackers with API access could create usernames that facilitate impersonation or stored XSS attacks. The vendor has added proper validation where it was previously missing to mitigate this issue.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows attackers who can access the XML-RPC API to create malicious usernames that may lead to impersonation of legitimate users or stored cross-site scripting attacks. This could undermine user trust and potentially enable further attacks via XSS. There is no indication of direct confidentiality, integrity, or availability impact beyond these issues.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. The vendor has indicated that proper validation has been added to the addUser method to address the issue. Until an official patch or update is released, users should monitor vendor communications for updates and consider restricting API access to trusted users only.
