Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: crowdsecurity
Product: crowdsec

Description

CrowdSec offers crowdsourced protection against malicious IPs. From 1.5.0 until 1.7.8, pkg/appsec/request.go NewParsedRequestFromRequest allocated a request body buffer from max(r.ContentLength, 0), so HTTP/1.1 requests using Transfer-Encoding: chunked and HTTP/2 requests without a content-length header produced an empty body and caused WAF rules targeting REQUEST_BODY, BODY_ARGS, ARGS_POST, JSON, or XML to be skipped. This issue is fixed in version 1.7.8.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-44982 is a vulnerability in crowdsecurity crowdsec affecting versions from 1.5.0 to before 1.7.8. The issue arises because the function NewParsedRequestFromRequest in pkg/appsec/request.go allocates the request body buffer based on max(r.ContentLength, 0). For HTTP/1.1 requests using Transfer-Encoding: chunked and HTTP/2 requests without a content-length header, this results in an empty request body buffer. Consequently, WAF rules that inspect REQUEST_BODY, BODY_ARGS, ARGS_POST, JSON, or XML are skipped, weakening protection. The vulnerability is fixed in version 1.7.8.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability causes the web application firewall to skip inspection of the HTTP request body in certain cases, potentially allowing malicious payloads in the request body to bypass detection. This reduces the confidentiality and integrity protections provided by the WAF. There is no indication of known exploits in the wild. The CVSS v3.1 score is 7.2 (high), reflecting network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and partial confidentiality and integrity impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in crowdsec version 1.7.8. Users should upgrade to version 1.7.8 or later to resolve this issue. No other mitigation or temporary workaround is indicated by the vendor advisory or data.
