Published: 08/24/2026 (08/24/2026, 21:19:00 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: open-telemetry
Product: opentelemetry-go

Description

A race condition vulnerability exists in the OpenTelemetry-Go library versions 0.11.0 through 1.44.0. The issue involves an unsynchronized map in the OpenTracing bridge's bridgeSpan, which can cause concurrent access to trigger a fatal runtime error and crash the process, resulting in denial of service. This vulnerability is fixed in version 1.45.0.

Technical Analysis

OpenTelemetry-Go versions 0.11.0 through 1.44.0 contain a race condition in the OpenTracing bridge's bridgeSpan implementation. Specifically, the extraBaggageItems map is accessed concurrently without synchronization during SetBaggageItem and correlation.MapFromContext calls. Since Go maps are not safe for concurrent read/write operations, this can cause runtime panics such as concurrent map read and map write or concurrent map iteration and map write, terminating the process and causing denial of service. The issue is resolved in version 1.45.0.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability can cause the affected application to crash due to fatal runtime errors triggered by concurrent unsynchronized map access. This results in denial of service conditions, potentially impacting availability of services relying on the OpenTelemetry-Go library.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in OpenTelemetry-Go version 1.45.0. Users should upgrade to version 1.45.0 or later to remediate this issue. No other official remediation or temporary fixes are documented. Patch status is confirmed by the vendor advisory indicating the fix in 1.45.0.
