Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: open-telemetry
Product: opentelemetry-ebpf-instrumentation

Description

CVE-2026-45683 is a low-severity buffer under-read vulnerability in the OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation component prior to version 0. 9. 0. The issue arises because the Java TLS ioctl probe uses bpf_probe_read instead of bpf_probe_read_user to read user-controlled ioctl pointers. This allows an instrumented local process to cause kernel memory to be copied into telemetry data. The vulnerability has been fixed in version 0. 9. 0. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Technical Analysis

OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation versions before 0.9.0 contain a buffer under-read vulnerability (CWE-127) due to improper use of bpf_probe_read instead of bpf_probe_read_user when reading user-controlled ioctl pointers in the Java TLS ioctl probe. This flaw allows a local instrumented process to read kernel memory into telemetry data, potentially exposing sensitive information (CWE-200). The vulnerability is addressed in version 0.9.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker with local instrumentation capabilities can cause kernel memory to be copied into telemetry data, potentially exposing sensitive kernel memory contents. The CVSS score of 3.8 (low severity) reflects limited impact as exploitation requires local privileges and results in information disclosure without integrity or availability impact. There are no known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation version 0.9.0 or later, where this vulnerability is patched. Since the vendor advisory confirms the fix in version 0.9.0, applying this official update fully mitigates the issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated.
