A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms that this issue is fixed in updated kernel packages. Users should update their Linux kernel to the fixed versions provided by their distribution to mitigate this vulnerability.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's FAT filesystem driver could cause a parent directory's link count to underflow during the rmdir operation when handling corrupted FAT images. This occurs because rmdir unconditionally decrements the parent directory's link count, potentially triggering a kernel warning. The issue has been fixed by adding a sanity check to ensure the parent link count is only decremented when it is at least 3, otherwise reporting a filesystem error.
