A patch is available and has been released by the Linux kernel maintainers and distributed via vendor updates such as Ubuntu's USN-8492-1. Applying the updated linux-aws kernel versions that include this fix will remediate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official patch.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's real-time scheduler (sched/rt) caused CPU0 to become overloaded and enter an infinite self-interrupt loop, leading to CPU hardlockup. This occurred when CPU0 hosted a mix of CPU-bound and non-CPU-bound real-time tasks along with a CFS task stuck in kernel space. The issue was due to improper handling of inter-processor interrupts (IPIs) during real-time load balancing, causing CPU0 to repeatedly send IPIs to itself. The flaw has been fixed by filtering the initiating CPU in the rto_next_cpu() function to prevent redundant self-IPIs and CPU hardlockups. Multiple specific linux-aws kernel versions are affected. A patch is available and included in recent Linux kernel updates.
