AI-suggested
A patch addressing this vulnerability is available and should be applied. The fix extends inode validation in ext2_iget() to reject inodes with zero i_nlink and valid mode, preventing corrupted inodes from causing kernel warnings. Users should update their Linux kernel to a version including this fix. No additional mitigation actions are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ext2 filesystem code allowed inodes with zero link count (i_nlink) but a valid mode to bypass existing checks, potentially causing kernel warnings and instability. The flaw was due to ext2_iget() not rejecting inodes where i_nlink is zero, i_mode is non-zero, and i_dtime is zero, a state indicative of filesystem corruption. This could be triggered by a crafted filesystem image leading to kernel warnings in drop_nlink() during unlink, rename, or rmdir operations. The issue was fixed by extending the i_nlink == 0 check to reject such inodes at load time, preventing them from reaching vulnerable code paths. The vulnerability was discovered by the Linux Verification Center using Syzkaller. A patch is available and has been incorporated in Linux kernel updates.
