A patch is available and should be applied to update the Linux kernel to a fixed version that correctly handles saving and restoring the affected MSRs. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms that this issue has been fixed in updated kernel releases. Users should upgrade to the fixed kernel versions as per their distribution's security notices.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's KVM subsystem related to missing save and restore handling of certain LBR MSRs (Model-Specific Registers) has been resolved. The issue involved incomplete handling of MSR_IA32_DEBUGCTLMSR and LBR MSRs, which were not properly saved or restored during virtualization operations. This flaw affected the integrity of LBR virtualization and could impact system stability. The vulnerability has been fixed by updating the kernel to correctly save and restore these MSRs and allowing controlled writes from userspace when LBR virtualization is enabled.
