A patch is available and has been released in Linux kernel versions 5.15.0-1117.124~20.04.1 and later. Users should update to these fixed kernel versions to remediate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's tun driver (CVE-2026-46321) causes a memory leak when handling short frames in the tun_xdp_one() function. The issue arises because the function returns an error without freeing allocated memory, leading to page-fragment leaks. A local attacker with access to /dev/net/tun and /dev/vhost-net can exploit this by sending specially crafted short frames, potentially exhausting host memory and causing an out-of-memory (OOM) panic. This flaw has been fixed in Linux kernel versions 5.15.0-1117.124~20.04.1 and later.
