Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: oscal-compass
Product: compliance-trestle

Description

A Server-Side Template Injection (SSTI) vulnerability exists in compliance-trestle versions prior to 3.12.2 and 4.0.3 in the `trestle author jinja` command. This vulnerability allows recursive evaluation of rendered templates, enabling an attacker to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the running process by injecting malicious payloads into data fields. The vulnerability does not require control over the template itself, only attacker-controlled input data rendered into a trusted template. Versions 3.12.3 and 4.0.3 address this issue.

Technical Analysis

The compliance-trestle tooling platform for managing compliance as code suffers from a Server-Side Template Injection (SSTI) vulnerability in the `trestle author jinja` command. The vulnerability arises due to recursive re-compilation and re-rendering of already-rendered output, which causes attacker-controlled input data fields (such as SSP documents or Lookup Tables) to become executable code. This allows an attacker to achieve arbitrary command execution with the privileges of the running process without needing control over the template itself. The issue affects versions prior to 3.12.2 and 4.0.3, with patches available in versions 3.12.3 and 4.0.3.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the system with the privileges of the compliance-trestle process. This can lead to full compromise of the affected system, including confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts. The vulnerability is exploitable via attacker-controlled input data rendered into templates, without requiring control over the template code itself.

Mitigation Recommendations

Versions 3.12.3 and 4.0.3 of compliance-trestle patch this vulnerability. Users should upgrade to these or later versions to remediate the issue. Patch status is not explicitly confirmed in the vendor advisory content provided, but the description states these versions fix the issue. No additional mitigations are specified.
