Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-46604 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability (CWE-125) in the TIFF decoder component of the golang.org/x/image/tiff package. When decoding a TIFF image with an invalid strip offset that points outside the expected bounds, the decoder may panic. This can cause a denial of service due to the unexpected termination of the decoding process. The vulnerability affects all versions before 0.43.0. No CVSS score or vendor remediation information is currently available.

Potential Impact

The primary impact is a denial of service caused by the TIFF decoder panicking when encountering a malformed TIFF image with an out-of-bounds strip offset. There is no information indicating code execution or data corruption beyond the panic. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Users should monitor golang.org/x/image project updates for a fix in or after version 0.43.0. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted or malformed TIFF images to reduce risk of application crashes.
