CVE-2026-47190: CWE-250: Execution with Unnecessary Privileges in metal3-io ip-address-manager

VulnerabilityCVE-2026-47190cvecve-2026-47190cwe-250
Published: 06/12/2026 (06/12/2026, 14:49:51 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: metal3-io
Product: ip-address-manager

Description

IPAM is the IP address Manager for Cluster API Provider Metal3. Prior to versions 1.11.7, 1.12.4, and 1.13.0, the IPAM controller's ClusterRole granted full CRUD permissions (create, delete, get, list, patch, update, watch) on core/v1 Secrets. The controller never accesses Secrets during normal operation. If the controller pod were compromised (e.g. via supply chain attack or container escape), an attacker could leverage these excessive permissions to read, modify, or delete Secrets in the namespace, potentially exposing credentials and other sensitive data. This issue has been patched in versions 1.11.7, 1.12.4, and 1.13.0.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-47190 describes an excessive privilege vulnerability in the metal3-io ip-address-manager. Before versions 1.11.7, 1.12.4, and 1.13.0, the IPAM controller's ClusterRole included full create, delete, get, list, patch, update, and watch permissions on Kubernetes core/v1 Secrets, despite the controller not requiring access to Secrets during normal operation. A compromised controller pod could allow an attacker to read, modify, or delete Secrets within the namespace, potentially exposing sensitive credentials or data. The vulnerability is addressed by reducing the permissions in the fixed versions.

Potential Impact

If exploited, an attacker who gains control over the IPAM controller pod could access, alter, or delete Kubernetes Secrets in the namespace. This could lead to exposure of sensitive credentials or configuration data. The CVSS score of 4.4 (medium severity) reflects the network attack vector, high privileges required, and high confidentiality impact but no integrity or availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability has been patched in metal3-io ip-address-manager versions 1.11.7, 1.12.4, and 1.13.0. Users should upgrade to one of these versions or later to eliminate the excessive permissions. No other mitigation guidance is provided or required.
