Description

A command injection vulnerability (CWE-77) in MeltanoHub prior to commit 923820de8f64d753951fbbd54f7282a3d5f75173 allowed exfiltration of the GITHUB_TOKEN with write permissions. The issue arose from the use of the pull_request_target workflow, which runs with base repository secrets. The vulnerability is fixed in commit 923820de8f64d753951fbbd54f7282a3d5f75173. No known workarounds exist.

Technical Analysis

MeltanoHub's source code for hub.meltano.com contained a command injection vulnerability due to improper neutralization of special elements (CWE-77). This vulnerability allowed an attacker to exfiltrate the GITHUB_TOKEN secret, which has write permissions to the repository. The root cause was the use of the pull_request_target GitHub Actions workflow, which executes in the context of the base repository and has access to secrets. The issue was resolved by a code change in commit 923820de8f64d753951fbbd54f7282a3d5f75173. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

Potential Impact

An attacker exploiting this vulnerability could exfiltrate the GITHUB_TOKEN secret with write permissions, potentially allowing unauthorized code changes or repository manipulation. The vulnerability does not impact confidentiality of other data directly but compromises repository integrity through token theft. There are no known exploits in the wild as of the published date.

Mitigation Recommendations

The vulnerability is fixed in commit 923820de8f64d753951fbbd54f7282a3d5f75173. Users should update to the version including this commit to remediate the issue. No workarounds are available. Patch status is not explicitly confirmed beyond this commit; users should verify application of this fix in their deployments.
