Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CWE-269) in Zimbra Collaboration Suite's GrantRightsRequest functionality permits an attacker with an authenticated account to escalate privileges by granting another local account the loginAs right. This improper privilege management flaw results in persistent unauthorized mailbox access and the ability to send mail as the compromised user, even after password resets or session terminations. The issue affects all versions before 10.1.20.

Potential Impact

An attacker with valid credentials can grant persistent mailbox access and mail-sending authority to another local account. This access survives password changes and session expiry, potentially allowing long-term unauthorized access and misuse of mailbox functions. The confidentiality of mailbox contents is at high risk, while integrity is impacted to a lesser extent. Availability is not affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available in Zimbra Collaboration Suite version 10.1.20. Users should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the vulnerability. No other mitigation guidance is provided or required.
