Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in llama.cpp (up to commit 97f06e9) occurs when the application is started with the --reranking flag. A remote attacker can send a specially crafted POST request to the /rerank endpoint with a negative top_n parameter value. This input leads to a denial of service condition by causing the application to throw a std::bad_alloc exception and respond with HTTP 500 errors. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 7.5, indicating a high severity denial of service vulnerability exploitable remotely without privileges or user interaction.

Potential Impact

The impact is a denial of service (DoS) condition that causes the application to crash or become unavailable, resulting in service disruption. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported. The vulnerability can be triggered remotely without authentication.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid using the --reranking flag or restrict access to the /rerank endpoint to trusted users to mitigate exploitation risk.
