A patch is available and has been released in Linux kernel versions 7.0.0-31.31 and later variants listed. Users should update to these fixed kernel versions to remediate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
A race condition vulnerability in the Linux kernel's iomap subsystem could lead to a null pointer dereference during error reporting when buffered reads fail and folios are truncated concurrently. This occurs because error reporting accesses folio->mapping without ensuring it is non-null after read completion decrements. The issue has been fixed by changing the order of operations to report errors before decrementing the read_bytes_pending counter. Multiple Linux kernel versions are affected, and fixes are available in the 7.0.0 series.
