Description

CVE-2026-53578 is a critical cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Trilium, an open-source note-taking application. Versions up to and including 0.103.0 have a flaw where the Safe import filter sanitizes HTML only for text notes but not for mindMap note types. This allows malicious HTML and JavaScript to be embedded in imported mind maps. When opened, the malicious script executes, and on the desktop client with Node integration enabled, this can escalate to remote code execution. The issue is fixed in version 0.104.0.

Technical Analysis

Trilium versions up to 0.103.0 have an XSS vulnerability due to improper sanitization of mindMap note types during import. The Safe import filter sanitizes text notes but excludes mindMap JSON content, which can carry a dangerouslySetInnerHTML property assigned directly to a node's innerHTML by the Mind Elixir library. This allows attacker-supplied HTML and JavaScript to execute when the mind map is opened. On the Electron-based desktop client, Node integration enables escalation from XSS to full remote code execution. The vulnerability is addressed in version 0.104.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can craft a malicious import archive that, when opened by a victim, executes arbitrary JavaScript code. On the desktop client, this leads to remote code execution due to Node integration being enabled in the Electron renderer. This can compromise the victim's machine with high severity consequences.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Trilium to version 0.104.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory. Patch status is confirmed by the fix in version 0.104.0.
