Published: 08/13/2026 (08/13/2026, 14:38:30 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: RsyncProject
Product: rsync

Description

rsync before 3.5.0 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the sender-side block matching logic that allows a malicious receiver to trigger memory access before the start of an allocated buffer by sending a crafted checksum block with a length of zero. Attackers can send a specially crafted checksum set containing a zero-length block to cause a negative offset calculation during delta computation, resulting in an out-of-bounds read of file data buffer memory on the sender side.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-53792 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in rsync before version 3.5.0. The flaw occurs in the sender-side block matching logic, where a malicious receiver can send a specially crafted checksum set containing a zero-length block. This triggers a negative offset calculation during delta computation, resulting in reading memory before the allocated buffer. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-129 (Improper Validation of Array Index) and affects rsync versions up to and including 3.4.4.

Potential Impact

An attacker controlling the receiver side can exploit this vulnerability to cause the sender to read memory out-of-bounds. This may lead to information disclosure or application instability on the sender side. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 7.1 (high severity), indicating a significant impact with network attack vector, no privileges required, and no user interaction needed.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Since no official fix or patch link is provided, users should monitor the RsyncProject advisories for updates and avoid using vulnerable versions (<=3.4.4) in sensitive environments until a fix is available.
