Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-5404 is a medium severity buffer overflow vulnerability in Wireshark's K12 RF5 file parser affecting versions 4.6.0 through 4.6.4 and 4.4.0 through 4.4.14. The issue arises from copying data without validating input size, leading to a crash and denial of service. The vulnerability requires local access with high attack complexity and user interaction, and it does not impact confidentiality or integrity. No vendor advisory or patch is currently available, and no known exploits have been reported.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes a denial of service by crashing Wireshark when processing crafted K12 RF5 files. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. The attack requires local access, high complexity, and user interaction, limiting the risk to denial of service only.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, avoid opening untrusted K12 RF5 files in affected Wireshark versions. Monitor Wireshark vendor channels for updates.
