Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-54423 is an improper protection of an alternate path vulnerability (CWE-424) in OpenStack Ironic before version 37.0.1. It allows an Ironic user who can deploy nodes using the IPMI management interface to maliciously send arbitrary IPMI commands to a node via the send_raw step, bypassing Ironic's intended access control mechanisms. This could lead to partial confidentiality and integrity loss, and high availability impact on affected nodes.

Potential Impact

An attacker with high privileges to deploy nodes via IPMI can bypass access controls and send arbitrary IPMI commands, potentially compromising node confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This could disrupt node operations or expose sensitive information controlled by the IPMI interface.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or remediation is currently confirmed. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the OpenStack vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict deployment privileges to trusted users only and monitor for unusual IPMI command usage where possible.
