Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: OpenStack
Product: Ironic

Description

In OpenStack Ironic before 37.0.1, an Ironic user with the ability to deploy nodes using the IPMI management interface can maliciously use the send_raw step to send arbitrary IPMI commands to a node, bypassing Ironic's access control.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-54423 is a vulnerability in OpenStack Ironic before version 37.0.1 that allows an Ironic user who can deploy nodes using the IPMI management interface to exploit the send_raw step to send arbitrary IPMI commands. This bypasses Ironic's intended access control mechanisms, potentially leading to unauthorized control of nodes. The issue is classified under CWE-424 (Improper Protection of Alternate Path). No official patch or remediation level is currently documented, and no known exploits are reported in the wild.

Potential Impact

An attacker with deployment privileges on IPMI-managed nodes can bypass access controls to send arbitrary IPMI commands. This may lead to partial compromise of confidentiality and integrity (low impact) and significant impact on availability (high impact) of the affected nodes, as indicated by the CVSS vector. The vulnerability could allow unauthorized manipulation or disruption of node operations.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the OpenStack vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, restrict deployment privileges to trusted users only and monitor for unusual IPMI command activity. No official remediation level or patch links are currently available.
