Published: 10/23/2026 (10/23/2026, 14:54:35 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: kitodo
Product: kitodo-production

Description

Kitodo.Production versions prior to 3.9.2 contain an XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability due to insecure XML parser configurations that allow processing of external entities. Authenticated users uploading crafted EAD/XML files can exploit this to perform local file disclosure and server-side request forgery (SSRF). The issue is fixed in version 3.9.2.

Technical Analysis

Kitodo.Production, a workflow management tool for mass digitization, exposes several XML parsing helper methods in org.kitodo.production.helper.XMLUtils that use default, non-secure JAXP parser configurations. These methods parse attacker-controlled XML input without disabling DOCTYPE declarations or external entity resolution, leading to an XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability. This vulnerability affects the EAD-import path where authenticated users upload XML files, enabling local file disclosure and outbound SSRF from the server. The vulnerability is addressed in Kitodo.Production version 3.9.2.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user can exploit this vulnerability by uploading a crafted XML file to cause the server to disclose local files or make unauthorized outbound network requests (SSRF). This can lead to sensitive information disclosure and potential further network-based attacks from the server environment.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability has been patched in Kitodo.Production version 3.9.2. Users should upgrade to version 3.9.2 or later to remediate the issue. No additional mitigation is required if the upgrade is applied.
