Technical Analysis

UltrafastSecp256k1 is a high-performance secp256k1 engine. Before version 4.2.0, its ECDSA adaptor pre-signature verification did not properly verify that the "r" value in the adaptor pre-signature was cryptographically bound to the adaptor point "T", allowing acceptance of forged adaptor pre-signatures. This represents an insufficient verification of data authenticity (CWE-345). The vulnerability has been addressed in version 4.2.0.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows acceptance of forged adaptor pre-signatures, which compromises the integrity of the signature verification process. This can lead to invalid signatures being accepted, impacting the integrity of cryptographic operations. There is no impact on confidentiality or availability reported. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to UltrafastSecp256k1 version 4.2.0 or later, where this vulnerability has been patched. No other mitigation is required as the issue is fixed in the official release.
