Vendor/Project: laurent22
Product: joplin

Description

Joplin is an open source note-taking and to-do application that organises notes and lists into notebooks. Prior to 3.7.2, Joplin Server's GET /items/:id/content route in packages/server/src/routes/index/items.ts loads item content from an attacker-supplied internal server ID without checking whether the signed-in user owns or can access that item. Any authenticated user who obtains or guesses another user's item ID can read the corresponding note or item content when end-to-end encryption does not protect it. This issue is fixed in version 3.7.2.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-55179 is an authorization bypass vulnerability in Joplin Server before version 3.7.2. The GET /items/:id/content endpoint loads item content based on an attacker-controlled internal server ID without verifying if the requesting user owns or has access to the item. Consequently, an authenticated user can read notes or items of other users if end-to-end encryption is not enabled. The vulnerability is fixed in Joplin Server 3.7.2.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user can access the content of notes or items belonging to other users by exploiting this flaw, leading to unauthorized disclosure of potentially sensitive information. The vulnerability does not affect integrity or availability but compromises confidentiality when end-to-end encryption is not in use.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Joplin Server to version 3.7.2 or later, where this authorization bypass vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated or required.
