Technical Analysis

Miniflux 2, an open source feed reader, prior to version 2.3.1, has a URL redirection vulnerability (CWE-601) caused by the IsRelativePath function in internal/urllib/url.go accepting redirect targets containing backslashes. Go URL parsing treats backslashes as path characters, but browsers normalize them to forward slashes, enabling an attacker to bypass relative-path and host validation in the login flow. This allows an unauthenticated attacker to redirect victims to external malicious sites. The vulnerability is fixed in version 2.3.1.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to redirect users to attacker-controlled external websites, potentially facilitating phishing or other social engineering attacks. The vulnerability does not require privileges or authentication and has a medium severity with a CVSS 4.0 score of 5.1.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Miniflux to version 2.3.1 or later, where this open redirect vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is required as the fix is official and addresses the issue directly.
