Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache MINA SSHD

Description

CVE-2026-56623 is a path traversal vulnerability affecting Apache MINA SSHD's sshd-git component on Windows systems. This flaw allows an authenticated remote user to access git repositories outside the configured server-side root directory due to ineffective path validation on Windows. The issue affects applications using sshd-git on Windows and was fixed in Apache MINA SSHD version 2.19.0 and 3.0.0-M5. Versions 2.0.0 and pre-release 3.0.0-M1 to 3.0.0-M4 are vulnerable.

Technical Analysis

Apache MINA SSHD is a Java library for SSH client and server implementations. The sshd-git component used to implement git servers on Windows platforms suffers from a path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) that allows authenticated remote users to bypass the configured root directory restrictions and access git repositories outside the intended directory. This vulnerability stems from incomplete path validation that was previously addressed in CVE-2026-48827 but remained ineffective on Windows. The vulnerability affects versions 2.0.0 and pre-release milestones 3.0.0-M1 through 3.0.0-M4. The issue is resolved in versions 2.19.0 and 3.0.0-M5.

Potential Impact

An authenticated remote attacker on a Windows system running a git server implemented with Apache MINA SSHD sshd-git can access git repositories outside the configured root directory. This unauthorized access can lead to exposure of sensitive source code or repository data. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.1, indicating high severity with high confidentiality impact, low integrity impact, and no availability impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade affected applications using Apache MINA SSHD sshd-git on Windows to version 2.19.0 or later, or to 3.0.0-M5 or later for the upcoming major release. This upgrade addresses the path traversal vulnerability by improving path validation on Windows. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
