CVE-2026-57183: CWE-287: Improper Authentication in Erudika scoold
Description
CVE-2026-57183 is an improper authentication vulnerability in Erudika scoold prior to version 1.69.1. The issue allows an attacker who obtains either of the signing secrets (app_secret_key or para_secret_key) to forge JWT tokens that grant access to privileged administrative API endpoints (/api/config and /api/stats) without requiring a registered API-key jti. This enables reading sensitive configuration and server logs. The vulnerability exists even when the API is disabled via configuration. The flaw is fixed in version 1.69.1.

Technical Analysis
In Erudika scoold versions before 1.69.1, the checkApiAuth() function accepts JWT tokens signed with either app_secret_key or para_secret_key for certain administrative endpoints without validating the presence of a registered API-key jti. This improper authentication allows an attacker with access to either signing secret to forge tokens that map to a hardcoded administrative user, bypassing normal login session restrictions and accessing sensitive configuration and server logs. The vulnerability affects the /api/config and /api/stats endpoints and is exploitable even when the API is disabled via the scoold.api_enabled setting. The issue is resolved in version 1.69.1.
Potential Impact
An attacker who obtains either the app_secret_key or para_secret_key can forge JWT tokens to access privileged administrative API endpoints, allowing them to read sensitive configuration data and server logs. This could lead to disclosure of sensitive information and unauthorized administrative access. Ordinary login session tokens do not provide this level of access, highlighting the severity of the improper authentication flaw.
Mitigation Recommendations
Upgrade Erudika scoold to version 1.69.1 or later, where this improper authentication vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory. Patch status is confirmed fixed in 1.69.1.
