CVE-2026-57845: Deserialization of Untrusted Data in huggingface datasets
Description
Hugging Face Datasets versions up to 5.1.0 contain a deserialization vulnerability in the deprecated pandas packaged builder. This flaw allows attackers to execute arbitrary Python code by supplying a malicious pickle file that is loaded without validation. When a victim loads such a dataset using datasets.load_dataset("pandas", data_files=...), the embedded payload executes with the victim process's privileges.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-57845 describes an insecure deserialization vulnerability in Hugging Face Datasets through version 5.1.0. The vulnerability arises from the use of pandas.read_pickle() in the deprecated pandas packaged builder, which loads pickle-backed datasets without validation. An attacker can craft a malicious pickle file containing a __reduce__ payload that executes arbitrary Python code when the dataset is loaded, leading to code execution with the privileges of the victim process.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary Python code on the victim system with the privileges of the process running the datasets library. This can lead to full compromise of the environment where the dataset is loaded, including data theft, system manipulation, or further attacks.
Mitigation Recommendations
No explicit patch or remediation details are provided in the input data. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid loading datasets using the deprecated pandas packaged builder with untrusted pickle files.
