CVE-2026-57863: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal') in crater-invoice-inc crater
Description
Crater Invoice through 6.0.6 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the self-update API that allows authenticated company owners to write arbitrary files outside the intended extraction directory by supplying crafted ZIP archives with ../ sequences to the unzip endpoint. Attackers can exploit unsanitized ZIP entry names passed to PHP's ZipArchive::extractTo() to write arbitrary PHP files into the web-accessible public directory and achieve remote code execution on the server.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-57863 is a path traversal vulnerability in Crater Invoice (<=6.0.6) affecting the self-update API. The vulnerability arises from insufficient sanitization of ZIP entry names passed to PHP's ZipArchive::extractTo() function. Authenticated users with company owner privileges can craft ZIP archives containing '../' sequences to escape the intended extraction directory and write arbitrary files, including executable PHP scripts, into the public web directory. This can lead to remote code execution on the affected server.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation allows an authenticated company owner to write arbitrary files, including malicious PHP scripts, into the web-accessible directory. This can result in remote code execution, compromising the server hosting Crater Invoice. The vulnerability has a high severity with a CVSS 4.0 score of 8.7, indicating significant risk if exploited.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, restrict access to the self-update API to trusted users only and consider disabling the self-update feature if possible. Monitor for updates from the vendor to apply an official fix promptly.
