Vendor/Project: nodejs
Product: node

Description

A vulnerability in Node.js allows a specially crafted spoofed TypedArray byteLength to trigger an assertion failure in synchronous node:zlib APIs, causing the process to crash. This affects all 11 synchronous zlib functions and can be exploited repeatedly to cause denial of service. The issue impacts Node.js versions 22.x, 24.x, and 26.x. No official patch or remediation guidance is currently confirmed.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-58045 is a resource consumption vulnerability (CWE-400) in Node.js where a spoofed TypedArray byteLength can trigger a reachable assertion in synchronous node:zlib APIs. This assertion failure causes the entire Node.js process to crash. All 11 synchronous zlib functions are affected. The vulnerability affects Node.js versions 22.23.1, 24.18.0, and 26.5.0. The CVSS 3.0 score is 6.2 (medium severity) with an attack vector of local (AV:L), low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and impacts availability only. There is no vendor advisory or patch information available at this time.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes the Node.js process to crash, resulting in denial of service. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. Repeated exploitation can sustain denial of service conditions.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted input that could trigger this vulnerability in synchronous node:zlib APIs.
