CVE-2026-58139: Incorrect Authorization in duckdb duckdb-aws

VulnerabilityCVE-2026-58139cvecve-2026-58139
Published: 08/03/2026 (08/03/2026, 19:45:31 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: duckdb
Product: duckdb-aws

Description

The DuckDB AWS extension for DuckDB contains a security policy bypass vulnerability that allows any database user with SQL execution permissions to extract plaintext AWS credentials by calling the load_aws_credentials function with the redact_secret parameter set to false, circumventing the database-wide allow_unredacted_secrets=false policy. Attackers can invoke this single function to retrieve the underlying AWS credential chain including access_key_id, secret_access_key, session_token, and region in plaintext, which are immediately valid against AWS APIs and particularly impactful in managed environments where pg_duckdb is preloaded and an AWS credential chain such as IMDSv2, IRSA, ECS task role, or EC2 instance role is reachable.

Technical Analysis

The DuckDB AWS extension contains a vulnerability that allows users with SQL execution rights to bypass security policies designed to redact AWS secrets. Specifically, invoking the load_aws_credentials function with redact_secret=false exposes plaintext AWS credentials despite the database-wide policy disallowing unredacted secrets. This enables extraction of the entire AWS credential chain, which can be used to access AWS APIs. The vulnerability affects cloud-hosted environments where DuckDB is deployed with AWS credential chains such as IMDSv2, IRSA, ECS task roles, or EC2 instance roles accessible. The CVSS 4.0 score is 6.0 (medium severity). A patch is available, and since this is a cloud service, the vendor manages remediation.

Potential Impact

An attacker with SQL execution permissions can obtain valid AWS credentials in plaintext, allowing unauthorized access to AWS resources. This compromises the confidentiality of AWS credentials and can lead to unauthorized actions within the AWS environment. The impact is particularly severe in managed environments where AWS credential chains are automatically accessible to DuckDB, increasing the risk of privilege escalation and data exposure.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available for this vulnerability. Since duckdb-aws is a cloud-hosted service, the vendor manages remediation server-side. Users should verify with the vendor advisory that their environment has been updated to include the fix. Until patched, restrict SQL execution permissions to trusted users only to minimize risk.
