Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Legion of the Bouncy Castle Inc.
Product: BC-JAVA

Description

A vulnerability in Bouncy Castle for Java (BC-JAVA) before version 1.85 and certain LTS and FIPS versions allows excessive memory allocation due to unbounded OpenPGP user-attribute subpacket length. This could lead to resource exhaustion. The issue affects versions prior to 1.85, and LTS versions from 2.73.0 up to but not including 2.73.12, as well as specific BC-FJA FIPS series versions.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-59649 is a CWE-789 vulnerability in Legion of the Bouncy Castle Inc.'s BC-JAVA library. The OpenPGP user-attribute subpacket length is only bounded by the JVM's maximum memory, allowing potentially excessive memory allocation. This affects BC-JAVA versions before 1.85, LTS versions from 2.73.0 up to 2.73.12, and BC-FJA FIPS versions prior to 1.0.13, 2.0.13, and 2.1.13 in their respective series. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.7, indicating high severity, with network attack vector, low complexity, no privileges or user interaction required, and high impact on availability.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows an attacker to cause excessive memory allocation by exploiting the unbounded length of OpenPGP user-attribute subpackets. This can lead to denial of service due to resource exhaustion. There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity impact. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or temporary fix information is provided in the available data. Users should monitor the vendor's advisories for updates and apply patches once available.
