Published: 07/29/2026 (07/29/2026, 15:40:26 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: NASA-AMMOS
Product: AIT-DSN

Description

NASA-AMMOS AIT-DSN versions before 2.2.2 have a critical vulnerability due to missing authentication in the Space Link Extension interface manager. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to access seven unprotected API endpoints via direct HTTP requests without credentials. Exploitation can enable attackers to start or stop Deep Space Network communication sessions, retrieve telemetry frame data, and inject arbitrary frames into active spacecraft links. The vulnerability has a high CVSS score of 9.3, indicating critical severity. No official patch or remediation guidance is currently available from the vendor.

Technical Analysis

The AMMOS Instrument Toolkit (AIT) Deep Space Network (DSN) Interface prior to version 2.2.2 contains a missing authentication vulnerability in its Space Link Extension (SLE) interface manager. This vulnerability permits unauthenticated network attackers to send direct HTTP requests to seven exposed API routes without any credential checks. Through these endpoints, attackers can manipulate critical spacecraft communication functions including starting or stopping DSN sessions, accessing telemetry frame data, and injecting arbitrary frames into active spacecraft links. The vulnerability is rated critical with a CVSS 4.0 score of 9.3, reflecting its network attack vector, no required privileges or user interaction, and high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Potential Impact

Unauthenticated attackers can gain unauthorized access to critical spacecraft communication functions, potentially disrupting Deep Space Network sessions, accessing sensitive telemetry data, and injecting malicious frames into active spacecraft links. This can lead to significant operational impact on spacecraft communications and data integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is released, restrict network access to the affected AIT-DSN interface to trusted sources only and monitor for unauthorized access attempts to the exposed API endpoints.
