CVE-2026-6045: CWE-787 Out-of-bounds Write in The Document Foundation LibreOffice

VulnerabilityCVE-2026-6045cvecve-2026-6045cwe-787cwe-190
Published: 06/15/2026 (06/15/2026, 16:22:16 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: The Document Foundation
Product: LibreOffice

Description

LibreOffice can import EMF+ graphics, which may be embedded in documents. A heap buffer overflow existed when importing an EMF+ gradient brush. The number of gradient blend points was read from the file and used to compute an allocation size, but that multiplication could overflow, so a small buffer was allocated and then filled as if it were large, writing past its end. In fixed versions the blend-point count is checked against the data actually available before allocating.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-6045 is a heap buffer overflow vulnerability in The Document Foundation's LibreOffice affecting versions 25.8 and 26.2. The flaw occurs during the import of EMF+ graphics containing gradient brushes. The number of gradient blend points is read from the file and used to compute the allocation size. Due to an integer overflow in this multiplication, a smaller buffer than needed is allocated, but the program writes as if the buffer were larger, causing out-of-bounds writes. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-787 (Out-of-bounds Write) and CWE-190 (Integer Overflow). The vendor has fixed this issue in later versions by validating the blend-point count against the available data before allocation. No official patch or remediation information is currently available.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to memory corruption via heap buffer overflow when importing crafted EMF+ graphics in LibreOffice. This may result in application crashes or potentially arbitrary code execution. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 5.4 (medium severity), reflecting local attack vector with low complexity, no privileges required, and user interaction needed. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. The vendor has indicated that fixed versions validate the blend-point count before allocation, but no official patch or update has been linked. Until a patch is available, avoid opening untrusted documents containing EMF+ graphics with gradient brushes.
