Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in nginx-ignition versions 2.33.0 through 2.35.0 involves improper authentication (CWE-287) where the Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) used for two-factor authentication (2FA) can be reused within its 30-second validity window. This could allow an attacker with certain privileges to reuse a valid TOTP token, potentially bypassing intended authentication protections. The issue is resolved in version 2.35.1.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability impacts the confidentiality of the authentication process by allowing reuse of a valid TOTP token within its validity period. This could enable unauthorized access if an attacker can capture or reuse the TOTP. However, exploitation requires user interaction and high privileges, and no known exploits are reported in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade nginx-ignition to version 2.35.1 or later, where the issue is patched. No other mitigations are specified or required.
