Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-6178 is a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in the Betheme WordPress theme's 'icon_box_2' shortcode. The issue is due to improper neutralization of input during web page generation, specifically insufficient sanitization and escaping of user-supplied attributes. Authenticated attackers with contributor-level privileges or higher can inject arbitrary scripts that execute in the context of any user viewing the affected page. This vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 28.4. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 6.4, reflecting a medium severity with network attack vector, low attack complexity, and requiring privileges but no user interaction. There is no vendor advisory or patch information provided, and no known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Potential Impact

An attacker with contributor-level access or higher can inject persistent malicious scripts into pages via the vulnerable shortcode. These scripts execute in the browsers of users who visit the infected pages, potentially leading to information disclosure or session hijacking. The impact is limited to confidentiality and integrity, with no direct availability impact reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only and consider disabling or avoiding use of the 'icon_box_2' shortcode to mitigate risk.
