Published: 09/09/2026 (09/09/2026, 00:00:00 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: cyrusimap
Product: Cyrus IMAP

Description

CVE-2026-61910 is an authorization vulnerability in Cyrus IMAP before version 3.12.4. It allows an authenticated user with maySetKeywords permission on another user's mailbox to change the mailbox's special-use annotation. This could enable the sharee to assign special roles like archived or snoozed to the shared mailbox, potentially causing mail to be written there and exposing more content than intended. The issue is mitigated by role duplication suppression if the target already has a non-shared mailbox with that role.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-61910 is an incorrect authorization vulnerability (CWE-863) in Cyrus IMAP versions prior to 3.12.4. The flaw allows a sharee with maySetKeywords permission on a mailbox to change special-use roles (such as archived or snoozed) on shared mailboxes. This could lead to unintended mail routing or content exposure by altering mailbox roles. The vulnerability requires authentication and low privileges but has a high attack complexity. Role duplication suppression reduces the likelihood of impact if the target mailbox already has the role assigned in a non-shared context.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user with limited privileges can modify special-use annotations on shared mailboxes, potentially causing mail to be delivered to shared mailboxes with altered roles. This may result in unintended sharing of mailbox content. The confidentiality impact is low, and there is no impact on integrity or availability. The scenario is considered unusual and mitigated by role duplication suppression.

Mitigation Recommendations

No official patch or fix is currently confirmed. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict maySetKeywords permissions carefully and monitor mailbox sharing configurations to limit potential misuse.
