VulnerabilityCVE-2026-63219cvecve-2026-63219cwe-862
Published: 09/03/2026 (09/03/2026, 17:13:01 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: geonetwork
Product: core-geonetwork

Description

GeoNetwork is a catalog application to manage spatially referenced resources. Prior to versions 4.4.12 and 4.2.17, the API endpoint for creating a new formatter via file upload is unprotected and allows the upload of external uncontrolled files. An unauthenticated attacker can upload arbitrary `.xsl` or `.zip` formatter files to the server. An unauthenticated attacker can write arbitrary files into the GeoNetwork formatter directory. On its own this constitutes unauthorized write access to server storage. The issue is patched in GeoNetwork versions 4.4.12 and 4.2.17.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-63219 describes a missing authorization vulnerability (CWE-862) in GeoNetwork's core-geonetwork product. Specifically, the API endpoint that allows creation of new formatter files via file upload is unprotected in versions prior to 4.4.12 and 4.2.17. This allows unauthenticated attackers to upload arbitrary .xsl or .zip files to the server, effectively enabling unauthorized write access to the GeoNetwork formatter directory. This vulnerability has been patched in versions 4.4.12 and 4.2.17.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated attacker can upload arbitrary files to the server's formatter directory, resulting in unauthorized write access. This could lead to potential manipulation of formatter files, impacting the integrity of the application. The CVSS 3.1 score is 8.6 (high severity), indicating a significant impact on integrity without affecting confidentiality or availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade GeoNetwork to version 4.4.12 or 4.2.17 or later, where this vulnerability is patched. No other mitigation guidance is provided; patching is the recommended remediation.
