A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The fix guards against setting the transition bit when the CID is MM_CID_UNSET, preventing the out-of-bounds bit clear. Users should update to the fixed kernel versions as provided by their Linux distribution vendors. No additional mitigations are required beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's sched/mmcid subsystem could cause a bounded out-of-bounds bit clear operation in kernel memory. This occurs when a task's context ID (CID) is unset (MM_CID_UNSET) during a fixup path, leading to a deterministic out-of-bounds write of a single bit 256 MiB beyond the intended bitmap. The issue arises only in per-CPU CID mode during a narrow scheduling window after fork or exec. The corruption affects a single bit of kernel memory at a fixed offset, not arbitrary memory or arbitrary values. This vulnerability has been fixed in updated Linux kernel versions.
