A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms that this issue has been fixed in updated kernel releases. Users should update to the fixed kernel versions to remediate this vulnerability.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's f2fs filesystem was resolved that involved reading copy-on-write (COW) data with the original inode during atomic writes. The flaw caused a null pointer dereference in the fscrypt decryption path due to inconsistent use of encryption contexts between the original and COW inodes. This could lead to a kernel crash (general protection fault). The issue was fixed by changing the read path to use the original inode's crypto context rather than the COW inode's, eliminating the null pointer dereference.
