AI-suggested
A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The fix ensures proper validation of compressed cache inodes only when the compress_cache mount option is enabled, preventing out-of-range inode numbers from being accepted. Users should update to patched kernel versions as listed in the vendor advisory. No additional mitigation steps are indicated beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's f2fs filesystem was resolved where the compressed cache inode validation was improperly handled. Specifically, when the compress_cache mount option is disabled, the inode number used for the compressed page cache inode is outside the valid range but was not properly checked, allowing a corrupted directory entry to bypass inode validation. This could lead to the instantiation of a fake internal inode. The fix ensures that the compressed cache inode validation only occurs when the compress_cache option is enabled, preventing out-of-range inode numbers from being accepted.
