AI-suggested
A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The fix rejects direct userspace writes to the reserved $LX* extended attribute names, preventing privilege escalation. Systems running affected kernel versions should be updated to the fixed versions listed in the advisory. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ntfs3 driver allowed unprivileged users to write directly to reserved extended attributes ($LX* xattrs) used internally for WSL permission metadata. This could enable an attacker to escalate privileges by planting root ownership and the S_ISUID bit on their own files, gaining effective root privileges after inode reload. The issue has been fixed by rejecting direct userspace writes to these reserved xattr names.
