AI-suggested
A patch addressing this vulnerability is available and should be applied. The fix corrects the bounds check in smb_check_perm_dacl() to prevent the out-of-bounds read. Users should update to patched Linux kernel versions as indicated by the vendor advisories. No additional mitigation actions are specified or required beyond applying the official fix.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ksmbd component causes a 2-byte heap out-of-bounds read during SMB2_CREATE operations due to a flawed bounds check in smb_check_perm_dacl(). This issue was introduced by a commit that incorrectly transposed a bounds check, effectively disabling it and removing a previous guard. The flaw allows reading beyond allocated memory, potentially impacting system stability and confidentiality. The issue has been fixed by correcting the bounds check to require a minimum size of 16 bytes. Multiple Linux kernel versions prior to 7.0.0-28.28 and specific 4.x and 5.x versions are affected. A patch is available, and no known exploits are reported in the wild.
