A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The vendor advisory confirms that the issue has been fixed. Users should update to the fixed kernel versions to mitigate this vulnerability.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ethtool EEPROM Netlink fallback path was resolved. The issue involved missing validation of the sum of offset and length parameters when reading module EEPROM, which could lead to unexpected behavior in drivers and device firmware. The ioctl interface had proper bounds checking, but the Netlink fallback did not, allowing potential memory safety issues. The fix added the missing validation and improved buffer initialization by switching from kmalloc() to zero-initialized allocation.
