AI-suggested
A patch addressing this vulnerability is available and should be applied promptly. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu (USN-8593-1 and USN-8603-1) details the fixed package versions. After updating the kernel packages, a system reboot is required to apply the fixes. Due to an ABI change, recompilation and reinstallation of third-party kernel modules may be necessary. Follow the vendor's update instructions carefully.
Description
A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's network shaper subsystem was resolved by reworking the VALID marking mechanism. The issue involved a race condition where a reader could observe a VALID mark, get interrupted, and then fetch a different entry pointer than expected, potentially leading to use-after-free. This flaw could result in privilege escalation or system compromise. The vulnerability affects multiple versions of the linux-hwe-edge kernel prior to certain fixed versions. A patch is available and should be applied to mitigate the risk.
