A patch addressing this vulnerability is available and has been released by Ubuntu and other Linux distributors. Users and administrators should apply the official Linux kernel updates that include this fix to affected versions. No additional mitigation is required once the patch is applied.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's hardware monitoring (hwmon) subsystem, specifically in the pmbus/adm1266 driver, allows a device to cause a buffer overflow by returning more data than expected during blackbox record reads. This occurs because the adm1266_pmbus_block_xfer() helper trusts device-supplied lengths without verifying buffer boundaries, potentially overflowing a 2048-byte allocated buffer by up to 191 bytes. The issue has been fixed by introducing a local bounce buffer to validate lengths before copying data. The vulnerability affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to 5.15.0-186.196 and specific older versions. A patch is available and has been released by Ubuntu and other vendors.
