A fix has been implemented and backported to Linux kernel versions 6.1.175, 6.6.142, 6.12.92, 6.18.34, and 7.0.11. Users should update to these or later patched kernel versions to resolve the issue. No additional mitigation is required once updated.
Description
CVE-2026-64248 is a Linux kernel vulnerability affecting MIPS architectures where the stop_this_cpu() function does not properly report a dying CPU to the RCU subsystem. This causes RCU to wait indefinitely for quiescent states from CPUs that are offline but still spinning with interrupts disabled, leading to system hangs during reboot or shutdown. The issue was observed on Realtek MIPS switch SoCs and affects Linux kernel versions including 6.1.175, 6.6.142, 6.12.92, 6.18.34, and 7.0.11. The vulnerability has been fixed by ensuring the dying CPU is reported to RCU once interrupts are disabled, allowing grace periods to complete and preventing reboot hangs.
