A patch is available and should be applied promptly. Ubuntu has released updated Linux kernel packages that fix this vulnerability as part of USN-8726-1. Users should update to the fixed kernel versions provided by their distribution. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
A high-severity vulnerability (CVE-2026-64380) in the Linux kernel's SMB client was resolved by hardening the POSIX SID length parsing. The issue involved insufficient boundary checks when reading the subauthority count from a SID buffer, potentially allowing truncated POSIX SIDs to be processed unsafely. This vulnerability affects multiple Linux kernel versions, including various hardware enablement (HWE) kernels. A patch is available and has been released by Ubuntu as part of their security updates.
