Technical Analysis

The Grav API Plugin (grav-plugin-api) prior to version 1.0.8 contains a missing authorization vulnerability (CWE-862) in its handling of admin tasks apiKeyGenerate and apiKeyRevoke. The plugin authorizes these actions based solely on admin.login, which is insufficient. As a result, a user with basic panel access can impersonate other accounts by creating persistent API credentials bound to those accounts, thereby inheriting their API permissions such as api.super or administrative write access. This flaw allows privilege escalation through unauthorized API key management. The issue is resolved in version 1.0.8.

Potential Impact

An attacker with basic panel user privileges can escalate their permissions by generating API keys for other users, including those with administrative rights. This leads to unauthorized access and control over the Grav CMS content via the API, potentially compromising site integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the Grav API Plugin to version 1.0.8 or later, where this missing authorization vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
