Published: 09/25/2026 (09/25/2026, 16:00:16 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: rabbitmq
Product: rabbitmq-server

Description

RabbitMQ is a messaging and streaming broker. From 3.13.0 until 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, and 4.2.6, mechanisms/1 applied list_to_atom/1 to every colon-delimited token in an attacker-controlled auth_mechanism value, permanently consuming Erlang VM atoms and allowing the node to be crashed with a large request. Exploitation requires the Shovel or Federation plugin to be in use, and setting auth_mechanism requires the policymaker tag. This issue is fixed in versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, and 4.2.6.

Technical Analysis

RabbitMQ versions 3.13.0 through 3.13.14, 4.0.0 through 4.0.19, 4.1.0 through 4.1.10, and 4.2.0 through 4.2.5 contain a vulnerability (CWE-400) where the function list_to_atom/1 is applied to every colon-delimited token in an attacker-controlled auth_mechanism value. This leads to permanent consumption of Erlang VM atoms, which are a limited resource, potentially causing the RabbitMQ node to crash when a large request is made. Exploitation requires the Shovel or Federation plugin to be enabled and the attacker to have the policymaker tag to set auth_mechanism. The vulnerability is addressed in versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, and 4.2.6.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation results in uncontrolled resource consumption of Erlang VM atoms, leading to a denial of service by crashing the RabbitMQ node. The impact is limited to nodes with the Shovel or Federation plugin enabled and where the attacker has the policymaker tag to set auth_mechanism. There is no indication of privilege escalation or data disclosure.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to RabbitMQ versions 3.13.15, 4.0.20, 4.1.11, or 4.2.6 or later where this issue is fixed. If upgrading immediately is not possible, restrict access to the policymaker tag and disable the Shovel or Federation plugins if they are not required to reduce exposure. Monitor vendor advisories for any additional guidance.
