Source: CVE Database V5

Description

In open62541 version 1.5.5, the server-side AddReferences function has an incomplete validation flaw related to non-local ExpandedNodeId targets. A remote attacker can exploit this by sending a crafted AddReferencesRequest with an empty targetServerUri and a non-zero targetNodeId.serverIndex, which causes the target node pointer to remain NULL while execution continues.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-67870 describes a vulnerability in open62541 v1.5.5 where the AddReferences implementation on the server side does not fully validate non-local ExpandedNodeId targets. Specifically, when a crafted AddReferencesRequest contains an empty targetServerUri and a non-zero targetNodeId.serverIndex, the server fails to properly set the target node pointer, leaving it NULL but continuing execution. This incomplete validation could lead to unexpected behavior or potential security issues during the processing of such requests.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows a remote attacker to send malformed AddReferencesRequests that bypass proper validation of target nodes. While the exact impact is not detailed, the flaw could cause the server to operate on a NULL target node pointer, potentially leading to undefined behavior or denial of service conditions. No information about code execution or data disclosure is provided.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or workaround is currently documented. Users of open62541 v1.5.5 should monitor vendor communications for updates addressing this issue.
